Agarwood, the world’s expensive tree is one of the most important in producing the most aromatic fragrances. The Agarwood or Oud products are the most demanding ones in the market and also, the most expensive. Apart from the majestic fragrance, Oud products also have immense health benefits that are uncompromising and unparalleled. From time immemorial, Agarwood has been a part of the luxurious and spiritual life. We have one of the biggest plantations in South Asia that contains the bulk of our agarwood harvest. We take pride in the fact that we own the biggest agarwood plantation in Kerala. Islamic and Buddhist cultural activities involve extensive use of the resin of Agarwood; traditional Japanese ceremonies also involve the use of agarwood resin.
Factors of Formation of Agarwood Resin
Five factors are recognized in the formation of agarwood resin. These are raw formation, ripe formation, removal, insect attack, and fungal infection.
- Raw Formation
Wounds are developed from the broken branches that occur with the destruction by natural forces, like windstorms, animal scratches, thunder, logging, etc. Resins are produced by the trees to heal the wound. During this period, Agarwood is produced. The quality of the scented wood is increased with the elongated period of the process.
- Ripe Formation
Continual production of resin results in the withering away of the trees and this creates a blockage of canals. By the passage of time, resins and wood fibers blend, solidifying into superior and hard, dark agarwood. This wood will sink in water. On the other hand, the life of the agarwood tree comes to an end.
With the wounded parts of the tree coming off as the result of small and large infection, it will contain remnants of resin. This blends with the wood textures, resulting in the formation of the Agarwood.
- Insect Attack
Agarwood is formed as a result in trees that produce resin for healing and self-protection when they are attacked and bitten by parasitic insects.
- Fungal Infection
The amount resin formed at the initial stage of fungal infection is very small. The prolonged infection prompts higher quality agarwood.
Produced at the tropical rain forests, Agarwood resins are the most demanding in the world. The oud products, which includes Oud Oil and Oud Tea, contain enormous health benefits. The benefits of these products include increased metabolism, relaxation of nerves for sound sleep and prevention of anxiety, controlled blood pressure, and diabetes, relaxation of joint pains, aphrodisiacs, healthy heart, etc. Apart from the health benefits, Agarwood gives the world’s best fragrances that leave people heads over heels. All the products are produced from the resin of Agarwood. The resins are not easily formed but occur as a result of the infection of the fungus in agarwood. Located deep in the trunk, the formation of the resin changes the density of the wood. The affected wood changes its color to a dark black or dark brown.
Agarwood is nearing its extinction due to the overexploitation. Since the supply of Agarwood cannot meet the demands, the tree has become highly vulnerable. With a large number of population craving for Agarwood, there is an enormous drawing of the resins and since the process of infection takes long, Agarwood products cannot be easily produced.
